All W. B. Walton Enterprises Heated Snow Shield de-icing systems are supplied with an automatic local controller which interfaces with a moisture sensor and thermistor to monitor precipitation and temperature. This system provides the user with a versatile, yet inexpensive method of controlling the de-icing system. These systems were designed specifically to operate in high noise, low temperature environments, for added reliability.
The Snow Shield Cover is designed for antennas in size from 0.6 meters to 6.3-meters in diameter. The Snow Shield consists of coated material, which is virtually invisible to RF, stretched over the front of the antenna's reflector. The Snow Shield can be used as a passive, Ice Quake, or heat system that can be added for a higher level of protection.
Walton’s Snow Shield antenna covers come in three varieties – all of which surpass our competitor’s covers, giving you better performance at lower system cost. Choose from a variety of options based on your performance, operational and budget requirements.
Unlike competing products that need to be removed during warmer weather to increase their useful life according to manufacturer's suggestions, Walton Snow Shield architectural fabric with either a Kynar® or Tedlar® coating give you many years of service without the need to remove the Snow Shield Covers during warmer months.
Compare the costs and downtime of having to replace your antenna cover several times over a 10-year period using our competitor’s covers with the price and performance advantages of a Walton De-Ice solution. With Walton De-Ice Snow Shield covers, an installed Kynar® or Tedlar® Snow Shield Cover will function from 10 to 15 years. Our top-of-the-line PTFE coated fabrics offer a usable life of 20 plus years.
Walton Snow Shield covers offer up to five times the useful life of competing products on top of all the other advantages.
Snow Shield covers can be used as passive or actively heated when used in combination with our electric or gas heaters. Only Walton offers you the powerful combination of a combined antenna cover and active heating – thanks to our patents in this area. In addition, with our Ice Quake product patents, only Walton offers you the ability to add vibration to your antenna cover to vibrate off ice and snow. Upgrade your Snow Shield and add an electric heater or gas heater or Ice Quake System, either at the time of purchase, or at a later date, without having to remove the Snow Shield Cover from your antenna.

Both Snow Shield Cover De-Icing Systems and the Gas Heaters for Plenum De-Icing now meet the European Union Declaration of Conformity for directives:
EN 60529:1991+A1:2000/IEC 60529:1989+A11999 and EN12669 (EN298:2003 EN126:2004 EN1854:2006)
EU Gas Appliance Directive Test Standards: 2009/142/EC (GAD)
EU Low Voltage Directive Test Standards: 2006/95EC
Environmental Tests: EN 60529:1991+A1:2000
Snow Shield Electric Heaters along with the DS-4C, DS-6, and the DS-12 are now under directive De-Icer Air Heater 29KJ.
W. B. Walton Enterprises, Inc. optional Feed Horn Covers can either be passive or heated.
The Passive cover is the same PTFE Coated fabric that is used to manufacture the antenna reflector cover. PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid, and therefore does a good job of preventing ice and snow accumulation on the feed.
For an even higher level of performance, Walton offers a Heated Feed Cover. The Heated Feed Cover is also the PTFE Coated fabric that has a 24VAC, 12 watt Silicon Heater Pad that is located inside the Feed Horn Cover and can operate at 220/230VAC 1-phase 50Hz or 120VAC 1-phase 60Hz.
Customers that have maintenance contracts are also purchasing the Passive Feed Horn Cover for Protection from UV rays degrading the window material and for protecting the feed horn window from birds pecking at the material and creating holes. The PTFE fabric is self-cleaning as well. We have been told that this can save thousands of dollars in additional site visits due to holes in the feed horn window.
*2003 Teleport Technology of the Year*
The DS-6 series of controllers were developed to provide a cost effective, automatic control system for Heated Snow Shields with Gas heaters or Electric heaters of 6KW or 12 KW. Like the DS-4C in operation, the DS-6 is in a NEMA 4X non-metallic enclosure which houses the DS-6 Printed Circuit Board, Terminal Blocks, and circuit breakers. These added items are required for the gas heaters and the larger electric heaters.
The DP-7SS remote Monitor and Control/Status Panel provides a low-cost method of remotely monitoring and controlling the DS-4C or the DS-6 De-icing Control Units. The DP- 7SS, mounted in a single rack unit (1.75 in. X 19 in.) panel with black finish to assure good indicator visibility.
The DP-7SS, which can be located up to 1200 ft from the DS-4C or DS-6, has a blower on and heater on indicator LED. Manual, Auto, or Standby mode can be selected from the DS-7SS Panel. Dry Contact I/Os are provided for interfacing with customer’s M&C System along with an Ethernet port for M&C interface.
